Bar

Today we are trying to get done our final touches, so going over all our props and costumes.
We got to see our bar today and its very exciting cause it looks great we just need to give it a layer of pain as thw wood it very light.
in this picture we can see a man holding out the removable pannel which we will be shining a light through in the bar scene.
Sarah and Mina wanted to start painting our screens for the beach photo shoot so they did a layer of white, so that when we do the blue layer it comes out well. here's a picture of them:

Layla and I saw the guitars that the media department have and chose one we think will look good.

Problems

Today we had a productive hour, Layla continued on the shot list and production schedule, while Mina went and edited our rehersal footage, and Sarah and I went and looked at the website which we shall be creating one for our band on.
We had a look at the different templates and fiddled around with one to make it look close to what we might have.

this is the website Wix once you have signed up, we did this just to try it out. theres many choises of templates and you can select different ones for different types of websites, so we chose musican.

this is the first one we saw that looked faily girly but i thought it wasnt quite right yet.

although this one is black and very structured so not very girly yet, it hink it has the potential if we were to fiddle around with it a lot, so this is the one we chose to experiment with editing them.

this is a screen grab of a little video we watched explaining all the different editing settings, which was really helpful and it showed how much we were able to change what was on the screen.

this is it at the end of only editing it for 10-20 minutes so theres so much more i could with it. i really like having a large photo in the middle and its actually a side show so we could have changing  photos of Emma on the front. This shoot shows the colour editing bar which lets you choose a rang of colours that change the whole website shades and then you can further go onto changing the individual colours. this i found fairly easy but some of the other stuff i didnt get to was a bit more complicated.

We had a big problem as when Mina went to edit it turned out that the technicians had deleted all of our footage bar a couple of scenes which weren't our main ones, which is very annoying cause we wanted to see what it looked like on camera but we can't now. We can learn from this that we need to be more prompt with getting up to edit our work.

Production meeting

Today we had a quick meeting at the beginning of our lesson to decided what everyone is doing. Here's a picture :

whats left to do

In our production meeting we wrote a list of all the things we needed to do:
  • redo schedule as our cast has chaged last minute again as some of our boys didnt check well enough to see if they were free and it turns out their not
  • organise a single rehersal just with Emma to practice the singing otherwise it will look really bad on the day, we also need to get her to practice being more sexy rather than girly.
  • talk to Matt and Paul (in the media department) as we now need them to be our removal guys
  • the barman that was in our video is now unavailable so we need to sort out our replacement bar man with a costume, this could be a problem as we didn't get one because Hendrick had one but he is a lot taller then Greg so the chances of his outfit fitting Greg is unlikely
  • do the shot list
Mina and Sarah created a schedule so we know who is doing what rolde on the day for the different scenes, which will be very helpful and keep us organised. Layla and I re did the schedule and created a shot list so we know exactly which shots we're filming when

Quick brain storming

Here's a picture of some ideas we put on the white board to help us look at what we will have in our ancillary products.
Putting in things like hearts and flowers will help us keep up the girly style and then we can use them though out all our other products to be an obvious band image.

Production Schedule

Today Layla worked on our Production Schedule, and with help from us giving the numbers we had and emailing for ones we didn't, we also did the call sheet.

The call sheet was fairly simple as we all had our own numbers and Sarah just emailed the boys that we didn't have for their numbers.

CALL SHEET

The production schedule was a lot harder to do as we have quite a few people to organise on 3 different sets, with different shots some of which include more than one set. It was important to organise the timings well for the boys so that they don't have to hang around when we don't actually need them. Layla wrote it down and worked out the wide shots we will do and so which characters we would need at the same time, and she got the schedule from doing that.

PRODUCTION SCHEDULE

While she was doing this I found the details of Stereo Totals record company and sent them an email asking for copyright permission to use the song, i also asked if they knew how i could get hold of the music for the songs so that our band members might be able to learn to actually play the song. i'm not really expecting a reply from them but it was worth a try.

Sarah and I also went up to speak to a guy about our music as we were still having an issue with it as its not available on English iTunes. Someone did download it off a YouTube converter but when we put that onto Final Cut Pro its didn't like it and made it sound very trippy. We talked about getting it on American iTunes but a girl from another group told us how they did that and it didn't work, so we kept thinking. I found a site to buy a vynal version but the media guys said this would be pointless as we would then have to have a record player, and then we would need something to convert it onto the computer. Luckily one the guy we were talking to said he would do some fidling with our downloaded version, so he took it off Final Cut Pro and put it onto another music application where it worked and managed to save it like that and get it back onto Final Cut Pro so it sounds right, so thats our music sorted out which was becoming a big worry.

emails

here is the email i sent to the cast after our rehearsal:

we have also gone up and told all the boys about the email to double check they see it and reply ASAP.
After the rehearsals Layla and I went and measured out our bar to send the details to Dan the set man so he knows how big to build it.

this is emails with the head of music about a bass guitar as we think it will look better than trying to get someone to play a chello like a double bass. as we have a limited budget we will have to see if the media department has one.

rehersals

this is a team photo from our rehersals yesterday, missing is Hendrick (pictured right) got someone to stand in for his part and i have spoken to him and told him what he missed.
Just to make sure all the boys rememebered where to go and when we sent them a last reminder email:

We made sure we booked a camera for 3pm and were there ontime so no other group took our slot. to help see how it would actually look Mina marked out the size of each set with graffer tape so they could all see it clearly. we also had to do this to measure it all out for the man building our sets and so we knew how much space we would have, we could see that it was going to be small but if we didnt over crowed it with furniture it should be fine, we also had to make sure we made it so that it wasn't too wide for the camera lens.

this rehersal wasnt just for our actors, there were things we needed to see and work out to see how things would go on the actual day. it was important for us to see the layout how it actually would be with people in the spaces. we could work out exactly what we will do in each scene, things may need to change because of the size and number of people in the sets.

imediatly we could see how small the sets are going to be which i think was a bit of a shock as we thought we would be able to make them bigger, so we new we needed to use the least amount of furniture as possible. like in the cafe we defiantly only need one table with two chairs, that with a bar nearly fills up the space, there would be no room for Emma to dance around with anymore. the bar cuts off a chunk of space but i think it will be worth it to complete the mise en scene. we worked out that we will need doors which will cut out more space. the small size of the set was becoming very realistic.

we began with a production meeting with all our cast talking them through the layot and what parts we wanted to try them out in. Maxim and Theo arrived which has caused an issue for us as they want to be in our video but we have been told that they aren't allowed in it which is very annoying as they played the parts really well and look good, so we need to work out weather they are defiantly in it or not.

the Cafe and Bar scenes are largely important and involve 5 members of our cast we began with them, so i let Jack our camera man and Greg another etra go off and have a drink but made sure they would come back soon when we wanted them for their scene and they did this. We forgot to set roles for our production team which was a mistake because it got a bit confusing as too who was doing what, we will make sure this doesnt happen on the actual day.

Sarah set the music up so we had it at the right time at 30 seconds when Emma changes sets. we explained how we wanted all the boys to obviously check Emma out while she was in the room, and discused a bit of dancing with three of the boys around Emma, we ran through this. immediatly the dancing didn't look quite right so we changed it to just Maxim and Theo dancing with Emma and ran through this again. Phil wasnt happy with the boys dancing and dint think it looked quite professional enough, so as we were running through it again i had a think and came up with an idea. i thought it would look great if Emma went round teasing the boys making them think she chose them but then would change her mind and move onto another guy, the team liked the sound of this so we tried it out. the idea worked very well, Emma has time in that scene to go to one boy (toby) pretend to want to dance with him then turn away and go to the bar (maxim) start dancing with him then run off to the next scene, just before she leaves she turned a blew a kiss to the boys.

As we were using the same cast for the bar scene we moved onto that one next. we began this scene with Emma in the last photoshoot (the beach) with Jack taking photos and Greg doing the lights then we moved with her across to the bar when she hears the music and had Theo pretending to play the bass guitar and Maxim pretending to play the keyboard, with Toby at the bar with the bar man. we then got Jack, Greg, Toby and the bar tender to pretend to be taking down the set around the band, i think this will look cool, we tried to do it as closly to how we want to do it on the day in our shots.

We were all happy with the changes we made to the Cafe scene and the cast did very well with what we asked them to do, they slightly started off a bit shy but thats one of the reasons we did this rehersal so they all got used to what they were doing and felt confortable. the bar scene also worked very well, we have decided to do another rehersal just with Emma to practice her singing to make sure it will look realistic.

After we let the cast go we had a production meeting to discus how we felt the rehearsal went and to make notes on anything we changed and felt we need to work on. Here are the notes we made:

It was very good we did this rehearsal as now the cast understand the video, if we hadn’t of done this we would have wasted a lot of our filming time, we want to try and do another rehearsal before the actual day especially with Emma to make her more confident with her singing the song because we don’t want it to look like a rubbish lip syncing.

We will organise who is doing what job for each scene, its great that everyone was involved but we need to clearly know who is doing which job so we’re not on top of each other trying to do the same thing.

We decided we need to talk to Emma about being more sexy and less cheesy to make sure she fits with the song. We need to make sure the boys remember not to be too theatrical too and that they are confident but by the end of the rehearsals they looked great.

I have been left in charge of emailing all the cast to tell them how happy we were with the rehearsal, which is important to make sure they know we are happy then they will feel more confident and happy to work with us.

We also want everyone to take a picture of their costumes which we discussed with them so we know what they are wearing before the day, I will involve this in my email.

We defiantly need to clear up weather Maxim and Theo our in the video, we luckily have someone who can replace Theo on the bass, but we need to sort out Maxim as we really want him and we will be limited on who we can get to replace him now.

Finally we need to send the band members the music so they can learn to play to song, so they don’t look silly with the instrument.

Audience research

To research into our potential audience we have all continued to study Lily Allen as she has many similarities to what we want our solo artist to be like and come across as.

To begin looking at Lily I went onto YouTube and looked at her song 'The Fear' and the statistics that go below the video:
This shows that the song is most popular with females aged 13-17 and up to 24. this is the range of our target audience, most popular in the UK.
Here are a few examples of a few comments left below :
"Forever i'll like this song! :D"
"She's so beautiful!"
"I`ve heard enough..I`m downloading this :3!"
"one of the reasons im proud to be english !!"
"Remembering good old songs, a 2008 awesome song. The fact that i'm listening to it in 2012 just prove that. LILY, please, COME BACK, Music needs you ! *"
"I want her dress.... so cute!!!"
All these comments were left less than a week ago.
Here is a screen grab of Lily's youTube channel:
this has all her latest music videos on, its also has links to related videos, so ones fans have made which is free promotion that the fans are doing themselves.

To find out more personal information i typed in
i clicked on the first fan site for her and it was full of information

There was abit of information on the side about the fan but it was all information on Lily. this site is great for fans, its appeals to young girls with the pinky colour andflowery graffics.
the site is also a big advitiser for Perfect-look.org
"It’s a fashion site where users can make a dressup doll, tag and share fashion pictures, collect buttons (like points) by playing around the site to get more dressup items and accessories for your dressup doll. Even if it’s not a site you’d use yourself, please join and invite some friends from email/twitter/facebook who likes fashion and might use a site like this.

this is a collection of links to other famous people, the people there are the top people that fans of Lily also look at.

so i had a look at a couple of them to see if there was any similarities

all the other affiliest link well to Lily as they are all very fashionable and appeal to young teenage audience, they are from both Britain and the US so are reaching a wide audience which is what we would want to do.
Pixie and Rihanna are both current glamours celebrities that young girls look up to.

to find out more about the fans and who they are i went to the very popular social networking site Twitter

Lily Allen is known for having one of the highest number of followers with nearly 4 million which is huge! Lily seems to be a rather open and frank person so by following her fans get to find out a lot about her and hear her opinions which fans love as they feel the direct connection and that they really know her. when creating our ancillary products i think it will be very important for us to create similar social networking accounts as its so popular and works well to promote the act.

looking at her followers on twitter its easy to see they are just what we thought and want for our acts, young tean age girls 12 -18, excatly who we want to target.

genre research into digipaks

Avril Lavigne

This is the digipak from Avril’s greatest hits CD, we chose to analys her because her genre is pop punk which is similar to our electro pump she is just slightly more ‘tomboy’ than our look is but she still appeals to young girls like us. The theme of the digipak relates very well to her style and the way she comes across to her fans, her style aspect is very important as she has such a different style to most female singers. Avril’s look is very punk and rebellious represented by the clothes she wears and the dark eye make up you can clearly see in the photos. The black background and bones on the CD clearly link with the rebellious genre style. The pink areas sell to young girls as it’s a popular colour with girls and shows that she still represents feminism. The large photos sell her to fans as she is looking very glamorous and that gives young girls a reason to look up to her.  I think this digipak is very successful as even I, not a massive fan of Avril can see that it all links very well to what Avril represents to strongly targets her young girls target audience.

Lily Allen
This digipak is for Lily’s ‘its not me, its you’ special edition album.  The font and size text for Lily’s name is very bold and clear with a white outline making it stand out, which means as there is no close up on her face people will be able to quickly see whose album it is. The digipak is unconventional in the way there is no big picture of her, I think this shows that she is not all about her looks she cares more about being creative. The large letters in the picture are relevant as they are using in her ‘Fear’ music video spelling out her name. I like how the front and back are lied out cleanly, there isn’t too much going on, which I feel is pointless as it draws your attention away from the music. I think the large 3D letters are really cool, and as she is a fuck out going girl, the subtle use of colour make it that bit more quirky. I think this digipak represents her in a slightly different way, as its not evolved around her look its more her expressing her style. Its also very unconventional of all the fonts to be different people normally stick with just one for all the different titles, instead she has a different font for the album name, its in small hand writing under her name which is harder to read but shows her as some one who doesn’t follow all the rules. As the layout for the front and back are very simple but memorable so are affective, and there is a clear link between the two as they both have the large letters.

With both Avril and Lily they have bands but in in their pictures you can't see anyone else and theres not even a hint of instruments which just shows how the female singers are the mosth important people, this is how we will want it with it all being about Emma.

Whose getting what

the group discused how Sarah had sent some emails to our cast about costumes, where she found out our bar tender had the right costume we wanted.

they looked at the rest of the costumes Sarah had researched into:

Decisions were made that Greg and Toby would be our removal guys wearing big boots, denim jeans and a plain white top, which are easy as the boys will have these outfits. We aslo wanted them to have these builder belts to make it very obvious what they were, i found that i have one at home so we need to source where we can get another one from.

So Hendrick (the bar man) has his costume, Greg and Toby (set builders) have theirs, Jack (the potographer) has a simple jeans and top costume that we have seen him in and liked, we want Maxim and Theo (band members and cafe boys) to wear casual dark clothes which is very simple and im sure they have these, Plum (make up artist) will be wearing all dark / black clothes so that she doesnt take any attention away from Emma.

I went and spoke to Jack to make sure he understood everything as he wasnt replying well to our emails.
Mina and I went up and edited the annimatic that we filmed yesterday in the lesson, while we did this Layla and Sarah continued working on costume.

This is a list they made for everyone:
This is a list of props we need to ask the drama department if they have:
this is an email Layla sent to Emma to see weather she had any of her costume already :

This is an email Sarah sent the cast askig to do a rehersal:

What we have left to do :
  • get the rest of our costumes
  • buy our props that we are getting
  • paint sets andput it all up
  • production schedule
  • call sheet
  • organise more rehersals with Emma

Copy right permission

As part of making a music video with an existing song we had to contact the artists or label they are signed to too ask for permission to use their song. Because the band aren't hugely well known, there wasn't a huge amount of information on them but i found their small label company and sent them an email. I never got a reply from them, so I'm not sure whether they saw it or not but we at least tried to contact them.

the Storyboard

This is our finalised time line that was edited from after the meeting with the set designer:

As our time line changed so we had to re-do the storyboard so that it fit, i also agreed to film it to make our annimatic.
