This is Tatiana's idea, which we all like. From the feedback everyone seemed to really like the glitter asspect, and the idea of using cherries as the brand image went down well but they dont need to be incorporated in the narrative of the song. the narrative with the male needs to be developed so we know what will go on there now.
Feedback
This was Lavinia's idea, and the feedback was:
firstly does it have to be him flowing her in such a creapy way as the song is more upbeat so doesnt sound very stalkerish, maybe he could just fancy her then the audience would be on his side.
another thought was that they dont need to get so close, he doesnt need to come into contact with her.
I agree with the points put forward, so think this idea should be put back into development after that feedback.

Music Video initial ideas
We have straight away got into provisional groups, i am in the group of four in our class. We began listening to the songs and ideas each person had come up with over the summer holidays, mine were :
Tv on the Radio - Wolf Like me
Desmond Dekker - Israelites
The three Ideas we decided to develop and brainstorm were :
Cities in Dust - Junkie XL

Immediately from listening to the song we knew what type of image the band would have, a small group of girls with a pop/rock look to them, being all about strong sexy girls appealing to teen ages girls as they would want to be them/ admire them.
We were listening to another similar song in the same genre called Cherry something, we liked cherry something as a name so joined it with the song name to get Cherry Dust. A lot of ideas began forming after this, with a concept of having large amounts of glitter falling all over the girls as they were getting ready to perform. We could do lots of effective stylistic shots of the glitter falling onto them and shinning in the light. The idea for the band image came as well, to have Cherries to be the symbol of the band. It's such an easy common object to market things like merchandising, and easily memorable as a logo. We also had ideas of involving a seductive scene with a boy and leaving glitter covering.
Video Games - Lana Del Rey
For this idea we sort of came up with a concept for the video before we chose the song. The narrative would be an almost life story of the singer, we thought of having the band and then there being a little girl that looks similar to the lead girl. The basic concept would be to show the girl being hit by her mum so she runs out of the house and goes on a sort of adventure, a sort of surreal place to get away from the problems at home. An other idea some one thought of for this video was for it all of most of it to be in back and white, maybe the bad scenes with her mum to highlight the colour when she goes off. The video would end with her turning up home, so would sort of finish of inconclusively not knowing what happens with the mum. The singer could be telling her story in this song as maybe she wrote it to get past problems and sharing the story with her fans is a way of connecting and showing what she had to deal with.

This was the first of the ideas we looked into more by brainstorming.

Call me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepson
We were playing some random songs trying to find one we liked for new ideas and this came on and we all started singing and dancing so we thought how that happened in flash mobs. This song became a craz very quickly and we have all found that when it comes on anywhere people will sing and dance to it, so we looked up some flash mobs like this:
When brainstorming we liked the idea of some hand held work, which would give it more of a natural feel which would be an important element to the video, it would have to feel none staged and the natural reaction from the crowd would be key. If we could pull it off this video could be great but already we are finding many problems of where would we do it where there would be enough people, would people actually join in, what would we do with bad weather conditions, how many start up dancers would we need, etc. So its already proving difficult but if it worked we think it would be really good.

There is an option of using Shelter - Birdy as the lyrics maybe would fit more with the story, but both are an option.

holiday work
Over the summer i have thought of three different music video ideas that i could potentially do. My first one was
TV on the Radio - Wolf like me
The image of the band would be 4 or 5 males (the real band are black but f don't see that as thei style with the sound) with an indie rockan d roll look.
My attraction to the band was their way of using abstract musical instruments and making them sound current and interesting.
I like how in first videos most organic bands, which is what i would promote this band strongly being, do videos that really introduce the band to their new fans, so the video would be dgvery much focused on the performance element with stylistic shots used to make it more interesting.
The song starts of a bit quiter where there could be a few close up as the beat begins. Then there would be lots of different shots of the band close up individual and wide.
The idea for my stylistic shots was to turn into show motion and have it in black and white possibly (they would be in a fairly dark location already, just a normal sort of empty set), then to have bright coloured paints dripping out and down the instruments. So for the guitar it could be dripping down the strings then dripping to the floor. On the drums it would be splattering as he hit them, which would make very effective shots in slow motion.
I thought not to have a narrative as it more about introducing the new band and so focusing on them and their performance.
The feedback from this idea was that it has "good visual idea but has been done quite a bit in the past". So if i were to do the idea i would need to think more about a way to make it more unique from the ones previously done.
Israelites - Desmond Dekker
I'm a fan of Ska music as their such happy fun songs to listen too so I was defiantly keen to do a video on one. I think that Ska is all about freedome, having soul and spirit and getting over struggles, so its a really motivating genre of music.
The thoughts i had for this song was to make it really fun and Jamacian as thats where it orriginated from, so the location would be in a really colourful room, with lots of wakey objects and knitted style furniture, with a really rastafarian feel to the place.

this image is too modern but the style of bright colours and homemade type objects around. there would be a group of quite old men around the room and as the music begins to play they would begin to dance as if their bodies are out of their control, then later on in the song you would slowly zoom out to see that they are all puppets on strings in a small box, adding a twist to the story. to give it another twist at the end of the song the men could break free from their strings and walk out onto a streat.
the freedback from this idea was "sounds cool, but very well known song". that is not a massive worry as its not precisly linked to the song so i could just chose another similar one and use the same concept.
Pogo - Digitalism
This song is still in the indie/alternative genre but a lot more modern style with the more computerised sounds. i thought about using the light computer sounds linked with lights, turning the camera onto a slow shutter speadso they begin to blur around and mix together, so the video would be like a light show changing on the beat. the band would be incorporated with this by having fun running round in the neon lights and waving them around. the editing (cutting) would get faster with the pace of the song. the aim of the video would be sort of a fun wild one you would watch when getting ready to go out getting you in the party mood.
the feedback from this song was just that it needs more thought, i enjoyed the ideas for the other videos more so i did probably put more thought and detail into them, but i do think this idea could be a fun video.

Micheal Masnick's presentation on the Formula for Future Music Business Models using Trent Reznor as a Case Study
composer and record producer. Being both a vocalist and a multi-instrumentalist he has lead the industrial rock project Nine Inch Nails from 1988.
The presentation evolves around the formula :
Connect with Fans+Reason to Buy=The Business model
CwF RtB $$$$
Mike believes that artist struggle to make money through selling records because of their lack of either one of the two elements to the formula.
Trent is an easy case study as he proves on many occasions that if used properly the formula is very successful.
Examples of Trent's ways of connecting with him audiences:
- Year Zero Alternate Reality Game - CwF by involving them in an online scavenger hunt enhances the fans experience of following the band, it also gets them very excited for the music and whats next.
- Year Zero - although he had already leaked music he gave the fans a reason to buy by adding an effect on the CD which made it change colours, therefor people wanted the physical copy.
- Leaking music - which got the fans very excited, free high quality maps on google showing where other people had downloaded the music too, links to buy tickets immediately after downloading the music, he would leave USBs in the loos of gigs for people to find but this made RIAA just unhappy.
He made the record label so unhappy that they dropped him, this enabled him to go out produce and sell in his own successful way.
For his 36 track album he began by giving 9 Free available to download, 36 were only $5, and for $10 you got a two disc CD set and a 16 page booklet.
Next came a $75 Deluxe Package followed by a $300 Ultra-Deluxe limited addition package, and the 2500 personally signed packages were sold out in just 30 hours!
The song 'Wish' won them a Grammy Award in 1993 for 'Best Heavy Metal Performance'!
'The Downward Spiral' entered at number two on the Billboard 200 chart in 1994, and still remains the highest selling Nine Inch /nails release in America.
He next released 'The Slip' entirely FREE, high quality downloads and the option for MP3. this was the album you could use the map on google to show you who else was downloading it which meant the fans could connect with each other.
The live shows he put on were not just live performances but completely entertaining shows.
Trent also new how to use the internet well to CwF as he did through the use of his website where he put up music, pictures, chats, forums, etc.
There are many other artist/producers that could be used as examples but Trent is a very easy obvious one as he does both and uses many different was to CwF and gives them RtB.
The great thing about the formula is that it works for any style or size of band ranging from all levels of popularity.

Jamal Edwards
Jamal Edwards, 20 year old founder of SBTV, an online music channel involving promos, video interviews and live performances."I'm a rebel when it comes to filming. I'll film everywhere, without permits or anything. This is a guerrilla operation."
the channel began in 2007 when Jamal was only 16. He got a video camera for Christmas and began playing around with it filming on his estate.
Back then you wouldn't find grime music, an ubiquitous hybrid of hip-hop and UK garage, on any mainstream TV channels so the artist had to resort to YouTube of DVDs. There was a large gap for a channel specifically for this genre of music.
He began filming live free styling on the streets of London, backstage at a gig or even in the back seat of a car. He would post the videos straight online without any high tech editing within days, so the performances were original and raw.
He has now began to branch out and film other artist such as Ellie Goulding, Nicki Minaj, Bruno Mars and even Justin Bieber because he didn't want to be restricted in his filming.
His channel makes its money from all the advertisement, and has now reached up to 50,000 subscribers and 39 million video views.
The downsides Jamal has found of being his own boss are how he is the youngest person on his team so he finds it "daunting telling people what to do."
The piece of advice he gives to other young people with similar dreams is to "chase your dream, not the competition, because looking at the competition will cloud your vision and mess you up in the long run."
The next move he wants to make is to go to New York and "work my way from the ground to the top, doing what i did here over there.' The competition with be tougher but he's not worrying about that like what he says in his advice quote.
The Guardian followed him which he was doing some of his raw filming in an underground car park of a supermarket filming a rapper called English Frank rhyming from a beat pumping form his car radio. by passing shoppers seem very bemused by the scene. the next artist is called Azonga also rapping with his car radio, who gives a quick shout out to the SBTV channel before beginning, in a few days the video will be viewed by thousands.

Photoshop
In our lesson the other day we learnt how to use photoshop, i have always heard a lot about it so it was interesting to finally see how it works.
We began with adding some images from different movies. I used the tool Polygonal Lasso Tool with the zoom to slowing and carefully go around the outline of a robot, when done this meant the robot was selected and could be moved around. I then made another layer to have the robot on so it wouldn't affect the original image, i then played around with moving, changing its size and manipulating the robot.
I then learnt to move the robot onto another image where i could adjust it fit in the different picture.
Finally i learnt how to change the colour of the robot which made it look slightly odd.
I enjoyed the lesson and now feel i can do some basic photoshopping.
